Overview

The psychology internship program at Center for Behavioral Medicine has been fully accredited by the American Psychological Association since 1963. The program offers a wide range of training experiences and opportunities for in-depth, comprehensive learning. In addition to inpatient and outpatient clinical training, the program has a long history of providing experiences in forensic psychology which this year culminated in the addition of two new pre-doctoral intern positions to be located at CBM’s sister-facility, Northwest Missouri Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center (NMPRC). Current internship positions include three clinical tract housed at CBM and two forensic tract housed at NMPRC. At CBM, there are five post-doctoral positions (two inpatient clinical; one inpatient forensic; two outpatient forensic assessment) for which interns are welcome and encouraged to apply.

The goal of the psychology internship program is to produce new professionals that 1) are proficient in the delivery of a broad range of clinical interventions; 2) are proficient in assessment and diagnosis of psychological problems, capabilities, and issues; and 3) function autonomously and professionally in a broad range of applied psychology settings. Competencies are measured according to each goal's objectives: proficiency in individual and group psychotherapy interventions that account for and respect individual differences; ability to evaluate treatment efficacy and modify interventions when needed; proficiency in selection and implementation of assessment methods with respect to individual differences; ability to interpret, conceptualize, and utilize assessment results for case formulation and recommendations; behavior reflects the values and ethics consistent with professional standards; ability to function as a consultant to a multidisciplinary team; and ability to effectively supervise trainees and provide professional presentations and teaching.

The Psychology staff of the training program is deeply committed, professionally and ethically, to the field of psychology. An essential outgrowth of this is a strong commitment to meet our responsibilities in the preparation of skilled psychologists. We advocate a scholar-practitioner model of training. The program recognizes the interacting influence of the practice and the science of psychology. We believe that the education of skilled psychologist is accomplished through providing applied experiences and training that integrates the science of psychology and human behavior. Interns are expected to think critically and utilize current research in their provision of mental health services. The training of interns occurs within an environment that recognizes the unique developmental needs of each intern.
