Center for Behavioral Medicine
Center
for Behavioral Medicine (formerly known as Western Missouri Mental Health
Center - WMMHC), an agency for the Department of Mental Health, is located
on Hospital Hill in the Heart of Kansas City to provide comprehensive
psychiatric care to patients from Kansas City and seven surrounding counties.
WMMHC opened in 1954 as the first racially intergrated psychiatric hospital
in Kansas City to serve patients of the city hospital system. In January
2004 WMMHC moved into a new 220,000 square foot, 5-story facility.
In June 2009, Western Missouri Mental Health Center (WMMHC) became the Center for Behavioral Medicine (CBM), an extended stay acute adult inpatient hospital.
In 2010, CBM opened a 25-bed unit for individuals opined as incompetent to stand trial and committed to the department of mental health for competency restoration treatment.
Today, CBM serves as the University of Missouri-Kansas City's Department of Psychiatry, fullfilling academic and research needs.
Truman Medical Center
Truman Medical Center Behavioral Health is an affiliate of Truman Medical Center (TMC) and provides an array of acute care and outpatient psychiatric services. TMC Hospital Hill has the busiest adult emergency room in the Kansas City metropolitan area with more than 60,000 visits a year. TMCBH is an outpatient community mental health center which is owned and operated by TMC, a public institution which receives partial funding from Kansas City, MO and Jackson County. TMCBH also provides consultation liaison psychiatry services to TMC’s medical and emergency services, operates clinics in the city and correctional centers, and operates two acute inpatient units and the emergency room within the CBM facility.
Northwest Missouri Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center
Northwest Missouri Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center (NMPRC) is located in St. Joseph, Missouri and provides long-term psychiatric services for adults, 18 years old and over, suffering from chronic and persistent mental illness. NMPRC is primarily a forensic hospital meaning that most of the patients are referred by the judicial system due to criminal charges. NMPRC is comprised of three 20-bed wings - Carver, Lincoln, and Twain; and six eight-bed cottages. The campus opened with this configuration in 1997, in the newly-constructed facility just across the street from the original campus of St. Joseph State Hospital.
The Center for Behavioral Medicine, formerly Western Missouri Mental Health Center, is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation for Hospital Organizations. The accreditation indicates that quality standards of care and treatment are practiced.
